Ringtones are popular sound clips that enable a mobile user to personalize and individualize his call or short-message sending and receiving experience. Having progressed from monotones to polytones to true tones over the last few years with better and better mobile phone audio hardware and software, ringtones have also come to represent a significant source of revenue for mobile content providers. One of the main ways by which these providers make the tones available is through a ringtone order service, where users text in their requests and ringtones are automatically sent to their mobile phone units. Another popular service is an Internet-based download site format, where users visit the provider’s website and key in their orders.
Founded by University of Michigan graduates Nareg Sagherian and David Pakhchanian, Bongotones.com is a company providing such a service, crafting custom online applications to make available for mobile content users. Hardly seeming like a natural progression from their college studies – Sagherian has three degrees in biology, biophysiology and Near Eastern studies and Pakhchanian graduated with a degree in economics, the website is a brainchild of the two’s desire to start up an online venue for social media and for help extended to local bands and musicians. The two worked with Soheil Banifatemi, a BS Computer Science graduate from the University of Toronto who had worked for I-Connect, to put the website together. Founded in Detroit in September 2007, the website first came online in September 2008 and rose to popularity that crested in February 2009, when they ended up having to close the site down for a redesign due to the sheer number of visitors.
Courtesy of a professional redesign from a Denver firm, the Bongotones.com website has since been perfected to the creators’ satisfaction and the fans’ excitement. It offers free ringtones of popular songs, which are downloadable for free. These tones work on almost all mobile phone models, which has enabled users of all kinds of mobile phones to enjoy the mobile music service. With over 25,000 visits a month from people of 50 or so countries downloading ringtones from a collection numbering 15,000 tones, Bongotones.com has risen to a considerable degree of popularity and public favor. This is maximized even further by its various applications – including ones that let users upload music of their own and create custom ringtones. Among other things, this increased level of participation, interaction and contribution has made Bongotones.com a prime venue for local bands, independent artists and major label artists to make their presence felt and let their music be heard. Five bands have so far signed up on Bongotones – all of them based outside of the US, something.
Viewing their venture as a raw startup business, the founders of Bongotones.com see their initial success as an opportunity to move into a business incubator, expanding with more knowledge in business planning and marketing. The openness of the people of Michigan toward helping others has also been cited as one of the best things about working in Michigan, which is something the Bongotones.com team try to reciprocate to the best of their ability with great and flexible mobile media download-upload features and excellent customer service.
