Will Ringtone Sales “Thrill” Us This First Quarter of 2010?

thriller25Even after constant and consistent efforts by mobile providers and music companies, ringtone sales continue to drop. Will the drop continue this year or will the ringtone industry have a boost after a couple of years of drought in sales?

Sales for Michael Jackson’s Music are Strong

From an article on Media Decoder “It is awkward, to say the least, to suggest, as the media critic Michael Wolff did on CNBC Friday, that Michael Jackson’s death “is the ultimate comeback” for the singer.” This fact may seem to be awkward but it is not necessarily wrong. At the moment, Michael Jackson’s music continuously rise in sales all over the world. It has suddenly become a sensation. Amazon and iTunes Stores show that Michael’s albums are on top of the charts. Amazon said that recently MJ’s CDs and MP3s increased 721 more than its usual sales just overnight. “Thriller”, one of Michael Jackson’s best sellers is ranked one of the top selling ringtones on iTunes. Will this phenomenon actually help boost the sales of ringtones for the first quarter of 2010?

Country Ringtone Tops Billboard Charts

Jason Aldean’s Big Green Tractor topped the Billboard ringscan chart. He told the Houston Chronicle how proud he is when he learned about this result. It seems ringtone sales have its good start this 2010. Will the music industry be able to build up their reputation again and put the ringtone industry back up on the charts?

After reaching the peak of sales in ringtones back in 2006 which amounted to six hundred million dollars, will Fergie, Kanye and Beyonce be able to help the comeback of the ringtone industry?

How much did the industry fall after it peaked in sales?

Ringtone sales, once a meaningful area of growth for the music industry, are projected to drop for the second straight year. After the 2006 peak, ringtone sales fell as much as 8%. From $600 million, figures fell to $550 million in 2007. Still, sales projection still point to a decline. Sales are projected to continuously decline. Its novelty phase has probably worn off.

Aside from ringtones being out of the spotlight, phones and software have been developed to create ringtones from old mp3 files. The demand for new tones has decreased. By using a third party software, ringtone addicts can create their personalized ringtones. This has contributed a lot to but in sales.

Amanda Marks, VP and GM of Universal’s electronic distribution department, is still hopeful that there is still money in the ringtone industry. She argued “we can still make money in this market.” Marks said that the “better” ringtones use snippets from original songs. These “high end” ringtones are still sellable and continue to grow even if “ringtone makers” found on the internet continuously grow as well. Ringtone sales are hopefully to go off the charts with new promotions from Telcos and the Music industry. Will the ringtone industry join extinction or rise and “Thrill” us again? All of these remain to be seen.
