Verizon Gets Exclusive Rights to Pearl Jam Ringtones

The music industry has opened a channel to have their songs distributed via mobile phones. There has been a collaboration of cellular phone companies with the music industry. Ringtone sales have been a promising spot for the music industry. Even though ringtone sales have been dropping drastically, Verizon Wireless continued to collaborate with Pearl Jam. They just have recently announced that they have exclusive rights to the ringtones of the band’s forthcoming album Backspacer.

Verizon promises to offer one new ringtone and one new ringback each week. VZW Tones of Verizon will release “The Fixer”, “Got Some”, “Amongst the Waves” and much more.

This is not the first time Pearl Jam and Verizon collaborated in releasing exclusive ringtones. Earlier this year, Verizon Wireless had a series of full-track downloads both ringbacks and ringtones. These featured ringtones spotlight a remastered and expanded edition of Ten, Pearl Jam’s debut album back in 1991.

Verizon has a good standing relationship with Pearl Jam and it is not a question if Verizon Wireless will co-release Pearl Jam’s new album. Pearl Jam’s manager Kelly Curtis said to Billboard that although the upcoming album release of Pearl Jam is tentatively titled Backspacer, deals aren’t all done yet. They are still negotiating with a gaming company, an online retailer and a wireless carrier.

Even if deals are not yet done with Verizon and Wireless, with the long standing relationship that they have with each other it is most likely that this fall Verizon co-launch Pearl Jam’s Backspacer album. Early 2008, Verizon Wireless featured Eddie Vedder’s Guaranteed.  Early this year, Verizon’s V Cast Music with Rhapsody launched exclusive Pearl Jam downloads.

As Verizon Wireless is busy having deals with Pearl Jam, it is also busy in its campaign to be the first to use 4G network. Verizon Wireless has achieved to be one of the first cellular phone companies to use fourth generation in replace of 3G phones. Verizon said they have made 4G calls from Boston to Seattle using VoIP over LTE.

Now this test call has not yet been launched and Verizon is still thinking of launching this new generation next year. Tom Swanabori, VP of Verizon said that “The software is pre-commercial…We plan to introduce commercial service on slightly newer version of Release 8, which meets our requirements.”

As Pearl Jam continues to tour the world having concerts, Verizon wireless continues to improve its service by developing the software it offers. Although 4G technology is still in pre-launch, Verizon is continuously adapting new ways and new means for ringtone downloads to be more fun and exciting for mobile phone subscribers.

As ringtone sales fell at least 24 percent last year according to SNL Kagan; Verizon, Sprint and Nextel, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other mobile phone companies must innovate ways to make ringtone sales more lucrative to their subscribers. If this trend does not change this year, the ringtone and ringback business will drop and continue to drop to it’s extinction.
