The music scene has always been one for swift but iconic transformations and big moments, and it comes as no real surprise that it has consistently been as fast-moving and quick-changing as the everyday life that music spices up and makes lively. Indeed, everything that comes into contact with music and the music industry can hardly help but end up moving just as fast itself, creating and transforming trends and catapulting unknowns to stardom [and sometimes back again] all for the entertainment of a sometimes fanatical, sometimes fickle market base. The veritable merger with the mobile media biz in the previous decade has only increased the dimensions of the playing field, making even more new avenues of technology available for music to make its presence felt in different ways.
Various models of phones have paved the way for more and more mobile music content in the way of ringtones and full music tracks in MP3 format. Users now have the best of both mobile and music worlds in many smartphone units, most of which feature voice call and text messaging and a variety of pre-installed and customizable applications. It was only a matter of time, then, before a new and even bigger change added another layer to the advancement technology has brought.
In September, Verizon Wireless made arrangements with EA Mobile (a division of Electronic Arts Inc.), Harmonix and MTV Games to make a specially-optimized version of the award-winning music and rhythm –based game Rock Band available on Verizon Wireless-powered mobile phones for the first time ever. The highly playable and addictive game includes a good handful of cooperative features such as Pass-n-Play and Cooperative Multiplayer, allowing players to include family and friends in making the most of following the bass, lead, vocal or drum tracks of given songs. Furthermore, the Tour mode enables players to focus on a specific band position while embarking on a sequence of performances in a “career” type setup.
Citing the game as one that has “made its way into mainstream culture,” EA Mobile’s vice president of worldwide publishing affirmed the excitement felt by EA Mobile in bringing the “cultural phenomenon” that is Rock Band to the mobile phone use platform. This is mirrored by Verizon, as represented by vice president of partner management and business development Ryan Hughes who has only good words or the “iconic” game – saying that “Rock Band mobile gives our customers with feature phones yet another super-cool game to play and another way to use their wireless phones for entertainment.
“Rock Band is an iconic game, and we’re excited to be working with EA to be the first to bring it to mobile customers.”
The award-winning video game’s first foray into mobile territory revolutionizes the mobile music market, providing an extra bit of impetus for users to get hooked on new and old songs, all while acquainting themselves with the instruments and vocals through the use of a four-item system. Rock Band mobile gives Verizon Wireless users the opportunity to hone their guitar [lead or bass], drum or vocal timing approximation skills. The game costs $3.99 for a monthly subscription [$9.99 one time use] and involves texting ROCK to 4236 [GAME] or visiting the Get It Now Media Center’s Games>Get New Applications utility location.
