Toy around with Toy Story Mania

clip_image002Mobile content has come a long way indeed, and this is something that mobile content providers have taken strongly to heart. Once limited to the buzzes, beeps and blips that formed the oldest of ringtones, mobile content has since enjoyed renewal after renewal, with mobile innovations spurring mobile content innovations and continuing on to go full circle. Now, mobile content sales run very strongly, spurred by the many types of mobile content out there – ringtones that have increased in sound quality and song fidelity, graphics that display crystal-clear on new smartphone touch screens, and software mini-apps that run various programs on the myriad smartphone platforms available today.

One such application type is the mobile video game, which has all but changed the mobile phone gaming world. Where once a mobile phone owner and user had to content himself with variations on Nokia’s Snake – essentially a chase involving a long line of pixels strung together and directed to eat other pixels but never itself, which has remained popular and challenging – now the options are nearly endless. Some companies have put together simplified and streamlined ports of popular console video games [from a variety of consoles], while some have put together all-new games – some original and some inspired by popular properties.

One such original but property-based game app is based on the Disney/Pixar Toy Story series, coincidentally timed to promote the upcoming third Toy Story movie, set to come out later in the year. Blending the characters and feel of the much-beloved series with the fun and frenzy of everyone’s favorite carnival games, Toy Story Mania is actually several games in one. It features egg tossing, ring tossing, shooting and a lot of other sub-games that help a player collect tickets in order to claim prizes. Prizes help players achieve higher scores overall and even more ahead in the difficulty levels set by the game. Progress also brings hints and secrets that help the player get even more points.

The Hamm and Eggs game stars Hamm the piggy bank, and has the player discovering fun ways to crack eggs. The Green Army Men Shoot Camp is, as the name implies, a basic shooter where the player does target practice runs on a variety of plates. Then there’s the Buzz Lightyear Ring Toss, with the LGM’s [little green men] and signature Space Ranger-aesthetic space ships, and [of course] some ring tossing. Bo Peep’s Balloon pop is an entertaining little game all its own. At first glance, Woody’s Shooting Gallery seems to be similar to the Army Men game, but each game has its own controls and dynamics, making it distinct from the others.

The graphics capture the look of the characters and their world very well, and the music goes one step further in truly immersing the player in the world of Toy Story. Everything from the levels’ colors to shapes and designs to the pleasant sound in all of them comes together to put together a very entertaining audiovisual experience that complements the fun level present in each game.
