With the advent of mobile applications, mobile gaming has emerged as the latest big trend to take the world by storm. Where once mobile content was limited to the actual text and multimedia messages that users sent and received, innovations added new and exciting types of content to be shared as well as sold. Ringtones and wallpaper quickly took over from there, evolving [with the mobile phones themselves] along their own developmental paths as ringtones shifted from beeps approximating a song melody to actual clips from songs and voice recordings and wallpaper grew in color quality, size and resolution. Now a proliferation of mobile applications has emerged as the harbinger of change, and it’s very entertaining change indeed.

Mobile developer Tapulous has, well, tapped into this lucrative and exciting market by creating Tap Tap Revenge 3, an addictive game that serves as a testament to both technological advancement and creative adaptation. First developed in September 2007 as Tap Tap Revolution by independent developer Nate True, the game has grown into a popular franchise for Tapulous – who have put together an engaging package that pushes the bounds of the integration of gameplay and musical quality. The first Tap Tap Revenge brought a lot of new stuff to the table – a multitude of useful features such as an altogether interesting career mode and online multiplayer competition.

One of the latest additions to the franchise, Tap Tap Revenge 3 continues the third-dimension expansion started by Tap Tap Revenge’s graphical overhaul. The rhythm-action gameplay continues to be brought across extremely well, and even incorporates DLC [downloadable content], with a full-on in-game store where players can buy licensed music to play the game with. This simple addition adds a whole new layer to the gameplay, and a whole lot of character to the game itself.

The 99c app already comes with over 100 tracks pre-loaded, all of which are “strong indie music” according to Tapulous’ Andrew Lace. Downloadable content includes $2.99 bundles of music from such top-notch acts as Blink 182 [Adam’s Song/Dammit/The Rock Show/What’s MY Age Again/more], Fall Out Boy [Sugar We’re Going Down/Dance, Dance/American Suitehearts/more], The Killers [All These Things That I’ve Done/Human/Mr. Brightside/others] and the Smashing Pumpkins [Tonight/Bullet with Butterfly Wings/1979/more], among others. 99c bundles bring song pairs from such artists as Bush [Machinehead/Glycerine], Coldplay [Lovers in Japan/Viva La Vida], The All-American Rejects [Move Along/Gives You Hell], Godsmack [Whatever/I Stand Alone], Lady Gaga [Love Game/Poker Face], Nine Inch Nails [Closer/Hurt], Robbie Williams [Angels/Let Me Entertain You], Gwen Stefani [Sweet Escape/Hollaback Gurl], Marilyn Manson [The Dope Show/Beautiful People], Maroon 5 [This Love/Makes Me Wonder], One Republic [Stop and Stare/Apologize], and Weezer [Hash Pipe/Beverly Hills], among various others like A Perfect Circle and AFI.

Putting all these tracks to good use is a solid game under all the musical flash, with Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme – and even Kids – difficulty-level solo and two-player modes joined by a feature-loaded Online Mode for larger-scale competitive play, and even a unique and entertaining Revenge Mode. The excellent, ever-evolving graphics make the overall package visually slick and shiny, meshing well with simple but effective controls and an immense music library that continues to expand every week with more “strong indie” downloads and signed licensed music.
