SAN FRANCISCO – T-Mobile’s CTO Cole Brodman teamed up with Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha yesterday at the GigaOM Mobilize conference debuting the first Android-based device of Motorola: the Motorola Cliq. T-Mobile USA gets exclusive rights to sell the Android phone in the U.S.

It will be made available to the market later this fall. The carrier plans to heavily market it for the upcoming holiday season. T-Mobile USA has not yet disclosed the specific pricing and availability of the phone. T-Mobile just makes it known that they have exclusivity to Motorola’s first Android device.

Motorola’s co-CEO assures the success of their new Android phone. Jha seems to be confident enough that Motorola will prove to turn about its reputation. He states, “This is one product, but we have changed the way we do business,” Aside from this first android phone, Jha said that Motorola will debut another Android handset in just a few weeks. This is rumored to be headed for Verizon Wireless.

The new Android phone, the Cliq, will also be available overseas through France Telecom’s Orange in the UK and France, Telefonica for Spain and American Movil for Latin America. The Cliq promises to be much more than just Motorola’s first Android-based phone it also is the first ever phone to carry MotoBLUR. MotoBLUR is a widget-based user interface that promises to be the foundation of future Motorola handsets. What MotoBLUR does is let users customize their handsets home page so that they no longer have to open and close applications. Just like the widgets on your PCs this can be integrated in your home screen which can let you communicate the way you want.

MotoBLUR also allows you to synch various social networking activities. A user is able to post a status update across social networking services. Other widgets will allow them to view messages from different sources including text messages, emails, and social networking messages on the phone’s home screen.

The Cliq not only supports MotoBLUR but also supports T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network. It also has WiFi. It has a slide-out Qwerty keyboard. It even has a full 3.1-inch HVGA touch screen display. The handset has a 5-megapixel camera, a headset jack, a music player loaded with MP3 from Amazon store and a 2 GB microSD memory card which can support up to 32GB of removable memory.

According to analysts, Motorola’s Android debut was commonly agreed upon as a solid debut. But they warned Motorola that competition would be tough and remain fierce. The vice president of research at CSS Insight John Jackson said that the Cliq validates Motorola’s bet on Android. MotoBLUR, he said, was a “positive start” but the competition will be most likely very intensive which Motorola has not anticipated.
Analysts further stated that the key for Motorola’s success is the holiday season sales. Investors are relatively pleased with this debut which sent the company’s stock up to 7 percent, to about $8.52 per share after the announcement. What’s in store for Motorola and T-Mobile is up to this first Android launch which researchers and analysts seem to be favoring well.
