Smartphones of today
The NPD Group conducted a number of researches and according to their numbers Americans love smartphones. The NPD Group said that during the second quarter their surveys found that about there was a 28 percent jump of all sales in handsets in the United States. The survey comprised of more or less one hundred fifty thousand American respondents. There was a big 47 percent increase in smartphone sale comparing it to the same quarter last year.
NPD, however, also pointed out that phones like BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, the ones not which do not have an operating system are still more popular in the cell phone market industry. The group said that phones like these comprise about 72 percent of overall sales in the U.S. market in the second quarter alone although it already went down 5 percent from last year’s second quarter sales.
As part of the survey, it was also noted that both LG en V2 (at Verizon Wireless) and Samsung Rant (at Sprint Nextel) are the two most popular phones in quarter two. What cell phone users love about them are the notable Qwerty keyboards which make these feature phones in demand in the market. The NPD survey also took note that it is the physical make up of the cell phone rather than the touch screen feature which made the 35 percent jump in handset sales in the quarter.
Ross Rubin, the NPD director of industry analysis said that “Feature phones are taking on more of the physical characteristics of smartphones, and often offer greater exposure to carrier services. Although their user interfaces still continue to improve, the depth of their applications generally lags behind those of smartphones. With the price difference between smartphones and feature phones narrowing, to remain competitive feature phones need to develop a better Web experience, drive utility via widgets, and sidestep the applications arms race.”
On the connectivity part, WiFi also gave a 20 percent boost in sales of all new handsets. NPD has duly noted that the WiFi feature is also what mobile phone users are looking for in terms of connectivity since feature phones are like small netbooks.
Touchscreens also had to be given due note in the NPD survey. In both smartphones and feature phones, touchscreens shipped a major growth in sales. 26 percent jump was evident in purchase of all new mobile handsets because of the touchscreens. The technology featuring the touchscreens made both smartphones and feature phones increase in sales in this quarter.
Juniper Research predicts that there will be a 79 percent increase in worldwide sales of low-cost phones and smartphones by the year 2014. It is still a long way for 2014 but Juniper Research’s prediction is not far from coming true. Also according to their research mid-tier feature phones, low cost handsets and high-end smartphones will continue to shrink in the next couple of years.
Evidently, according to the surveys and researches, the trend for the smartphone is set. The sales of 40 million handsets is a 27 percent increase from last year’s second quarter which is a very big chunk of money: 286.1 million dollars in total!
