Mobile content and music marketing have gone hand in hand for the better part of the last decade, ever since increasingly swift and significant advances in technology joined with the times’ increasingly fast-paced lifestyle to make cell phones a personal item instead of the formal business versatility necessity they once were. Technology keeps making phones smaller and more compact, while seemingly paradoxically increasing what they are capable of instead of lessening their already diverse capabilities. Music labels and mobile content providers have capitalized on these developments, making more and more ringtones and custom sound clips available for users who wish to personalize their mobile experience to the tune of their favorite song from their favorite artist.
Apple’s iPhone has been leading the charge in unifying the musical and mobile media markets. Blending the voice call and text messaging capabilities of the cell phone with the memory capacity and musical quality of Apple’s signature iPod, this touch-screen smartphone has made a name for itself as a sought-after item. Hot on the heels of announcing a new version of iTunes that brought pre-cut ringtones and other mobile musical content to the fore, Apple is now embarking on a venture to bring the wildly popular music and rhythm game Rock Band to the iPhone and iPod Touch as a new app.
Having already taken the mobile stage through Verizon Wireless in September of this year, the barely two-year-old video game was developed by Harmonix, and is published by MTV Games and distributed by EA Distribution – and has taken the world by storm, making music enthusiasts of anyone who can follow a beat by tapping their fingers. By pressing four buttons in specified sequences to approximate the playing of a song’s lead guitar, bass guitar, drum or vocal parts, a player immerses himself or herself in the world of his or her favorite song – making Rock Band the perfect vehicle to bring the iPhone and iPod Touch a fresh spin on the mobile music experience. The Apple mobile versions will most likely involve screen-tapping instead of the now-typical multiple-button setup, adding new layers of challenge and playability to the already-addictive game.
The mobile version of Rock Band is set to be optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and at the moment is projected to feature 20 songs – from the Beastie Boys’ classic “Sabotage” to 2000-era hits from the Foo Fighters [“Learn to Fly” and “Everlong”, the latter also available on the PSP version] and even currently-playing groups like Rise Against. This diverse playlist also includes 0 Seconds to Mars’ song “Attack”, AFI’s “Girl’s Not Grey”, the All-American Rejects and “Move Along”, Blink-182’s “All the Small Things”, Blondie, “Hanging on the Telephone”; George Thorogood & the Destroyers, “Bad to the Bone”; Jethro Tull, “Hymn 43″; Joan Jett, “Bad Reputation”; Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Simple Man” Motörhead, “Ace of Spades ‘08″; Pixies, “Debaser”; Presidents of the United States of America, “Ladybug”; Silversun Pickups, “Lazy Eye”; Smashing Pumpkins, “Cherub Rock”; Steve Miller Band, “Take the Money and Run”; and The Go-Go’s, “We Got the Beat.”
