The mobile market and the music market have been intertwined for a long time, a union marked by speedy advancement and constant turnover in catering to customer satisfaction and matching demand. Mobile media has proven to be a more or less evergreen commodity, although its constantly transforming landscape has brought its users and producers to various formats of distribution and arenas of marketing. Aiding this is the continual flux of trends in the music industry and the continued development of newer and better phone models, providing more customization options and more room for the use of mobile media such as ringtones.
Apple is one company that has been making money hand over fist in catering to both the music and mobile markets. For over 30 years running, the company name has become synonymous with technological advancement and a devoted user base – Fortune Magazine named Apple the most admired company in the US in 2008, and in the world in 2009 – through such developments as the Macintosh and the Newton, and the ubiquitous iPod. This last has become one of Apple’s most well-known and well-received innovations through the last eight years, through its transformations into smaller and smaller and more convenient models that blend capacity and flexibility with unparalleled sound quality.
However, Apple’s true successful fusion of the best of both the mobile and music markets can be found in the iPhone. Combining the storage capacity and user-friendly interface of the iPod with the call and message sending and receiving capabilities of a cellular phone and adding various new features such as a touch screen and user-customized mini-programs, the iPhone has proven to be a true hit. Its Internet access capabilities, camera and digital imaging applications, and 3G compatibility in later models have established the iPhone’s – and Apple’s – dominance in the mobile media market.
Stepping up their mobile media offerings, Apple recently obtained the rights to offer ready-made ringtones for the iPhone, a development which will soon provide their users with the convenience of obtaining a pre-clipped ringtone instead of having to manually edit a song into shape themselves. This news comes amid rife speculation and possibilities of various other developments at Apple, impacting both its music and mobile markets. It’s also possible that new upgraded iPods will also be debuted soon, perhaps alongside a Beatles playlist catalog for iTunes, the company’s proprietary digital media application.
Apple and the iPhone have been revolutionizing the mobile media industry, and the pre-made ringtone offerings are a step in that direction as well – and one that looks to be well received, as consumers have consistently shown receptive behavior toward paying around $3 for ringtones in the past. This behavior and the versatility of companies and their marketing strategies – not to mention the sheer variety and depth of the music industry’s own offerings – have made ringtones a viable commodity for music labels and retailers alike. While ringtone sales seem to be in decline according to various sales figures researched by SNL Kagan, the matter of making ringtones convenient and affordable remains one that companies and providers will be working to focus on.
