She was born in 1984. Her real name is Onika Maraj but she is better known as Nicki Minaj. Her debut album is Pink Friday and is anticipated to be released this coming November 23, 2010. She also has a couple of mixtapes. Signed under the Young Money Entertainment group, Nicki continues to wow people with her passion in rap music.
Onika was born in Trinidad and stayed there with her grandmother for 5 years. She moved to Queens after that. She claims to have grown up with an abusive father who was an alcoholic and drug addict. Once, her father tried to kill her mom by putting the house on fire. Life for her was hard as she grew up with a father who was a drunkard. She said in one of her interviews that music helped her go through all the pain of growing up. Good thing she graduated in LaGuardia High School which specialed in music, visual and performing arts.
In 2004, Nicki began her singing career as background vocals for rappers in NY City. Given a break by Dirty Money CEO Fendi, she signed a contract with the group. She released her first mixtape in April of 2007 entitled Playtime is Over. She posed as Barbie on the cover of the album. This mixtape was well accepted by the hip hop industry.
She has had collaborations with artists like Mariah Carey (Up Out My Face Remix), Ludacris (My Chick Bad), Usher (Lil Freak), Christina Aguilera (WooHoo) and Sean Kingston (Letting Go: Duty Love). Recently, she has released her first single entitle Massive Attack which features Sean Garrett. Minaj then released Your Love, her first official single from her debut album to be released this coming November.
Currently peaking the Billboard charts, Minaj soars high at number 14 and number 7 on the Hot R&B Hiphop Songs Chart. She is the first femal artist to top the charts unaccompanied by any other artist since the year 2002.
History is being made by this girl from Trinidad. Soaring high the billboard charts and soaring high the ringtone charts, she continues to get the attention of the hip hop industry by making a name of her own.
