Along with the emergence of the mobile phone as a personal item that goes beyond the traditional concept of owning a gadget to keep in touch with business or work contacts, mobile content has made a name for itself as a viable, marketable commodity. The customization and personalization potential inherent in the mobile phones themselves, already open to being extensions of their users’ personalities, is maximized further by the content that users select, copy and install. The combination of the mobile and music industry markets is a virtual no-brainer as well, allowing companies and carriers to maximize their users’ musical tastes in artists and styles to create a strong market for ringtones and music ordering.

The modern age of mobile content marketing has had companies hitting upon several innovations that keep the environment fresh and dynamic, such as websites that provide pre-cut ringtone and other mobile content for users. Mobile carriers and music companies are engaging in various tie-up projects that open up entire libraries of artists and titles for users to download with or without DRM copy protection. Even the aforementioned pre-cut ringtones aren’t the kings of the hill anymore, as services like mSpot’s Makr-UR-Tones applications have brought users the ability to custom-trim their favorite songs and sound clips.

mSpot has made the Make-UR-Tones application available to AT&T and US Cellular customers, enabling them to use the award-winning app to download, edit and purchase custom ringtones to be copied to their mobile devices. Over 250,000 titles initially from music labels Universal Music, Warner Music, INgrooves, IRIS, and EMI Music – and Sony Music Entertainment, whose offered library brings the song bank up to over 400,000 titles – have been made available to users who can now customize a one-to-30 second ringtone from a song of their choice. The current state of affairs gives mSpot one of the largest customizable ringtone libraries in North America.

Make-UR-Tones is a fairly simple application to use with a user-friendly interface and usage process. AT&T customers can download the application from the AT&T Media Mall on their phone, select a song through the use of an advanced search engine, and then use the intuitive editor to cut the part of the song they want to use as their ringtone. Clips of up to 30 seconds may be created through the intuitive waveform editor. The service is available for a monthly fee of $6.99 for three ringtones while additional custom tones may be purchased individually at $2.99.

Along with the award-winning Make-UR-Tones “intuitive editor” that helps users customize full songs into shorter clips for ringtone use, the mSpot website also features various bits of information on users’ favorite artists and titles, such as lyrics, artist bios and song recommendations. The California-based mSpot is a mobile music and entertainment company catering to more than 4 million customers from diverse wireless carrier services, bringing them access to music, live radio and videos and movies, and custom ringtones. mSpot’s partners in content provision include ABC, Fox Sports, Paramount Pictures, Disney, Warner Brothers, and Universal Music Group, allowing them access to a wealth of content to provide to their broad customer base. The recent partnership with Sony Music Entertainment is projected to give them even more and even more diverse content to share – the leap in available titles is already a substantial increase in content – and one that ought to be received positively.
