MJ Rocks from Beyond

After many years of development, mobile content has emerged as a truly viable commodity, and a valuable one at that. The expansion of mobile phones themselves into more sophisticated models has only exacerbated this growth, especially in light of current smartphone developments. These phones have also come into their own, being much more capable and diverse than their forebears were, and are changing the mobile field with ever-faster, more multifunctional and more practical features both of the hardware and software sort. For that matter, these features have also allowed and encouraged the growth of even more mobile content types and distribution methods.

Mobile entertainment has been a strong commodity on its own under the various types of mobile content currently available. The entertainment industry has tied up with the mobile industry to produce various examples of stellar and high-selling mobile entertainment content based on whatever hot properties are currently popular. Even longtime legends like Journey have managed to live on in the mobile content sphere, courtesy of ringtones and the like that are still selling well. Mobile users have continued to embrace these types of mobile content as a way to express their individuality and maximize the capabilities of their mobile handsets.

One artist whose stock has gone up thanks to the ubiquity of mobile content is the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Already one of the most popular artists of all time due to his groundbreaking contributions to modern music in general and pop in particular, Jackson was a beloved musical figure whose loss was felt by the world when he passed away last year in the midst of grueling preparations for what would have been a powerful comeback tour. While it was also arguable that the tour may have been a last grab at whatever fame he had remaining, it remains true that Jackson’s place in the modern musical pantheon was cemented long ago and brought back to  the public eye by his sudden passing.

How well has Jackson’s musical worth been cemented? Billboard reports that MJ Inc. has generated some $1 billion since his death, broken down into numerous revenue streams. These include music recording sales, which have numbered around $429 million, then film and television sales which clock in at $329 million. Music publishing has netted $130 million, with licensing and touring making $35 million and recording contract running up with $31 million. Jackson is a force to be reckoned with on iTunes, Amazon and various other digital channels, with songs that have generated 12.9 million downloads from the US alone over the last year, according to SoundScan.

Mobile content, for its part, still exhibits a considerably Jackson-heavy influence. Possibly an expected offshoot of this resurgence of interest in Jackson’s back musical catalogue, the proliferation and popularity spike of Jackson-based mobile content is notable. Ringtone sales in the US alone totaled 1.5 million in the year since his death, sending the signal that Beat It, Rock With You, Billie Jean and Smooth Criminal are still prominent in the mobile sphere.
