Whether as the robust and strong mobile commodity of its early days or as the adaptable, versatile commodity of more recent years, it’s clear that mobile content has always ridden the wave of popular culture. Whether in the form of ringtones that allow users to install clips of their favorite songs and set them to play upon signaling an incoming call or text message, or as wallpapers that allow users’ favorite actors, actresses, characters or personal snapshots to serve as backgrounds for their mobile phones, mobile content has enabled users to express themselves and share their style with little to no hassle. The recent proliferation of mobile apps has allowed even more types of mobile content to be shared.
Among the latest developments is the arrival of three apps that publish more than 70 Marvel comics titles on Apple’s popular iPhone. The US-exclusive apps Comixology, Panelfly and iVerse have come to make available some of the hottest titles from the popular publisher on the equally popular smartphone model. The various titles will be available for $2 each via the In App Purchase function available with Comixology and Panelfly’s apps – both free – and for 99 cents through iVerse. This announcement comes hot off the heels of Marvel’s own announcement of the $8.99 Spider-Woman: Agent of SWORD TV series this summer.
Among the titles available are some of Marvel’s current foremost properties. The X-Men, classic characters and poster-children for the publisher and the many themes they have come to embody, are represented by a variety of titles. The first is the strong-selling Astonishing X-Men, the hot series by Hollysood super-scribe Joss Whedon (”Firefly”, “Serenity” and “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”) and detail-oriented artist John Cassaday (“Captain America”, “Uncanny X-Men”, “Planetary”) which ushered in a new age for Marvel’s merry mutants, relaunching the X-Men with the Reload story arc. Featuring groundbreaking plot twists and intimate, accurate character reintroductions across an epic, sprawling backdrop, Astonishing X-Men is the definitive modern X-Men through Whedon’s lenses.
Also in the X-Men corner is X-23, the miniseries that launched currently popular title character X-23, the young female clone of mutated Marvel mainstay Wolverine, and the always-interesting X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, a series-spanning epic set in an alternate universe where X-Men villain Apocalypse has seemingly emerged victorious in the war against humanity.
From the broader Marvel Universe comes Marvel Zombies, a story proceeding from a crossover attempt originally set in Marvel’s “Ultimate” alternate universe. The Robert Kirkman-written series with art from Sean Phillips and covers from zombie master Arthur Suydam was one of the top graphic novels of 2007, and spawned multiple follow-ups to continue the sad and sick story of Marvel mainstays turned flesh-eating cannibals.
On a brighter and more inspiring note, Marvel’s flagship hero, Captain America, joins the mobile comics cavalcade courtesy of writer Ed Brubaker (“Batman”, “Iron Fist”, “Gotham Central”, “Catwoman”) and artist Steve Epting (“X-Factor”, “Avengers”). The popular 2004 relaunch introduced Cap to a new generation of readers raised on renewed patriotism in the face of global terrorism, and continues to shock and awe comics fans and mainstream audiences alike in the wake of Civil War and Cap’s impending Rebirth.
All told, the year is looking bright for the young and the hip who are all over the comics scene and the tech scene – especially considering that Apple, Marvel, Comixology, Panelfly and iVerse have come together in the most interesting team-up of the year.
