LG’s Wine returns

Mobile phone manufacturing continues to be taken to new levels with each mobile phone put out by mobile phone manufacturers. Experts at integrating new technology seamlessly into existing frameworks and structures, these manufacturers have continued to show how adept they are at making user-friendly and multifunctional mobile phone models that offer a wide variety of options and features for the busy modern user. The best part is that they have focused on making all these options and features easy to access and master the use of, making the mobile phone that much more desirable to a wider variety of users from the techie to the layman.

LG has put together just such a phone in the LG Wine 2, which follows in the footsteps of numerous LG-made predecessors, one of which is of course the original Wine. LG is of course known for designing a variety of handsets for numerous budgets and user styles, from high-end phones like the LG Expo to entry-level phones like the first Wine. The Wine 2 follows up on the latter by catering to the same market branch and providing them with a great mobile experience, as even though it skips on providing preinstalled browser or email apps it nevertheless gives users an easy-to-use phone with stereo Bluetooth and 2-MP camera, and more.

From its glossy plastic shell to its slender 3.97-inch length by 1.97-inch width to 0.62-inch thickness, the Wine 2 cuts a sleek and light package that fits well in hands and pockets – the same pockets not harmed by its fairly friendly price tag. On the front of the flip phone frame is a fairly large external 1.77-inch display, showing time, date, battery level, signal strength and caller ID as per most LG phone models. It supports 262,000 colors, wile the 2.4-inch internal main display – revealed when the phone is flipped open – supports a slightly higher count at 262, 144 colors. Both are sharp and colorful displays, with crisp text and vibrant images showing up well on the main display.

Basic features include a 1000-entry phonebook [each entry can support two email addresses and seven numbers] with caller group and photo assignment support. Other basic features are speakerphone, a vibrate mode, and basic organizational features like a note pad, calculator, world clock and calendar. The Wine 2 supports voice command and PC syncing, and comes with stereo Bluetooth as well as EV-DO Rev O 3G. You’ll have to download the mobile web browser and email apps from the EasyEdge store yourself, however, which puts a bit of a cramp in the otherwise user-friendly package you get when you first open the box.

The 256 internal memory is expandable with microSD cards, which comes in handy for the excellent if somewhat simplistic music player which supports MP3, AAC and AAC+ files. You can create and edit playlists, set songs to repeat or shuffle, or forget installing your own music entirely and just go for the built-in FM radio tuner. Finally, the 2.0 megapixel camera is an improvement on the first Wine’s 1.3-megapixel shooter, although it still takes pictures in four resolutions and in three quality settings, with many of the presets and features similar to the first Wine’s. Call quality is fairly good, and texting is very easy with the Wine 2’s roomy and responsive keypad.
