iPhone to use the Force

Mobile content has undergone changes in format and delivery over the last decade or so, owing to an ever-growing popularity with an increasingly technologically savvy user base that has also discovered mobile phones themselves as a popular personal item. Since mobile phones became personalized gadgets for people from all walks of life as opposed to work-only items for busy office personnel, various entertainment options have been explored with regard to mobile media and music, as well as mobile applications like games and organizational mini-programs. Mobile content has adapted to the fast pace of life, helping it speed up in some cases and helping its user base manage the speed.

More than merely ringtones and wallpapers, mobile content has expanded to include management applications and even games. Accommodated by increasingly ubiquitous new models of mobile phones such as the iPhone and iPod Touch, video games from popular consoles such as the Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 have become popular downloads and purchases on mobiles. This is a trend that is being capitalized upon by video game magnates THQ Inc. as their mobile arm THQ Wireless Inc. begins to unleash their latest release for the iPhone – a global download of the hotly anticipated iPhone version of Star Wars: Trench Run.

The United States-based, 20-year-old Toy HeadQuarters Inc. has become a worldwide force to be reckoned with in the development and publication of video games, with franchises licensed from outside [such as the popular WWE Smackdown series and games made with Disney/Pixar, which include Cars: Race-o-Rama] as well as games developed in-house [such as Red Faction, MX vs. ATV, and Company of Heroes]. They bring their expertise in crafting quality games to both the Star Wars mythos and Apple’s popular iPhone with Star Wars: Trench Run, a quality game that is now downloadable globally on iTunes for $4.99 and that seeks to allow players to relive one of the most iconic moments from Episode IV: A New Hope.

The Trench Run is, of course, to sci-fi enthusiasts and would-be Jedi around the world, the defining moment in the fledgling Jedi Luke Skywalker’s emergence as a rebel leader when he successfully managed to cripple Darth Vader’s immense space base, the Death Star – the shot “heard around the galaxy” – guided only by the mystical unseen Force. The iPhone platform can deliver “simple motion controls”, most likely via its touch screen, to enable players to reasonably realistically bring the screaming laser chase to life. Working together with leading development studio Infrared5, THQ Wireless is proud to say that they have brought a thoroughly entertaining experience to the platform.

The game will enable players to use such powers as Force Power to approximate Jedi reflexes in what must feel like other games’ “bullet time” with slower attacks and greater defense reflexes. This can bring enemy TIE Fighters into a player’s shooting range and help the player dodge would-be obstacles in the trench. The 3D graphics and special effects, capably handled by a system such as the iPhone, will provide lifelike character models rendered in an equally lifelike manner with state-of-the-art lighting and shading. This, combined with “true-life flight” powered by realistic physics and accelerometer control, will immerse the player in a high-fidelity Star Wars experience.
