Apple is no stranger to the courtroom drama but who is HTC guilty of copyright infringement? Apple said that they sued HTC, their rival smartphone manufacturer who they accused to have infringed 20 patented iPhone user interface, architecture and even hardware. The company said that it filed the lawsuit in the US District court in Delaware.
Steve Jobs said that they have to do something about this infringement. He said “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”
Apple is proud of their product and how advanced they have come with their technology just to let anyone copy them and make a fool out of themselves. The company did not immediately respond as to what particular patent and technology is covered under the disagreement with HTC but they are sure that they made valid claims of their property rights.
HTC has also made a lot of smartphones which can be considered a competition for Apple. One is the Nexus-One which is a Google Android based phone. HTC, also a big wireless phone manufacturer, has to respond to Steve Job’s accusations. In response they said “We have been very focused over the past 13 years on creating many of the most innovative smartphones. HTC values patent rights and their enforcement but is also committed to defending its own technology innovations,” HTC has just recently learned about the lawsuit from Apple and have not investigated on the matter yet. HTC said “Until we have had this opportunity, we are unable to comment on the validity of the claims being made against HTC.”
Aside from Apple’s battle with HTC, it has also filed patent infringement claims against Nokia.
The patent war goes on and on. The company’s CEOs could just sit back and relax and let the sales do the talking or they can file a lawsuit if this is they are into it, and Apple is into filing a lawsuit. It is a busy day for Steve Jobs and Apple. But HTC vows to fight back at Apple. HTC has filed earlier this may a lawsuit saying that Apple has done 5 patent infringements against them. They even asked the ITC to ban imports of Apple products like iPhones, iPods, iPads into the United States.
“As the innovator of the original Windows Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition in 2002 and the first Android smartphone in 2008, HTC believes the industry should be driven by healthy competition and innovation that offer consumers the best, most accessible mobile experiences possible,” Jason Mackenzie, HTC’s vice president for North America, said in a statement. “We are taking this action against Apple to protect our intellectual property, our industry partners and most importantly our customers that use HTC phones.”
Who would win the war? I think we still have a long way to go before we know the winner of the battle.
