When we go online and surf the internet, the first thing that comes to mind is Google. Founded by Larry Page and Serge Brin, Google began in 1996 and has now become the most popular search engine. The company’s unofficial slogan is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Google has generated billions of dollars and at the same time also helped a lot of internet users. Because of them, searching online has become easy and accessible to anyone.
In 2008, Google also developed an operating system called Android which is being used by a couple of phone manufacturers. With its many innovations and contributions in technology, Google Inc. has already established a strong foothold in our society. Recently, Google has also announced the release of their first smartphone called Nexus One. This most recent innovation will represent the next step for Google. The Nexus One or Google phone is expected to be sold directly to customers without them being tied to a particular telecom carrier. Google phone consumers will have the option of choosing their wireless carriers. It is said that a unit that has no ties to a specific carrier will cost about $530 while one that has contracts with T-Mobile and such will be for $180.
“With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we’ve seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation,” Google said. “And this is just the beginning of what’s possible.”
Google has been a little timid and reserved about the new smartphone. There has been a mixed reaction from consumers and critics about Google’s Nexus One. Some had compared Google following the hype of Apple’s iPhone and doubt that the Nexus One will become as successful as the iPhone, which had an outstanding success and performance since its release in 2007. “Just coming out with a high-end phone really doesn’t buy you much,” analyst Van Baker said. “You’d be hard pressed to come up with enough revenue from pushing ads to pay for the phone service.” Google will be walking a fine line between marketing Nexus One and continuing to be a partner for the number of companies making mobile phones based on Android. It is going to either kill or make the Android operating system.
Despite some negative feedbacks that Google has been getting about the Nexus One, countless of electronic fanatics are still very anxious and supportive about this new smartphone in the market. The Nexus One comes with pre-installed Google Navigation and the new Google Goggles. Google Goggles is also another innovation from Google that allows consumers to use pictures as a parameter when doing a search. This is a whole new different experience for Internet surfers. You upload a picture that you want and the search engine will display essential information about it. Whether Nexus One becomes the next big thing or not, I still give kudos to Google Inc. for the many contributions they made in today’s technology.
