FPS action on the iPhone goes… NOVA

Mobile content had a great year of rising and expansion in 2009. Indeed, the turn of the decade was a great time in general for mobile content, as it had come a long way from not even existing some years ago when mobile phones first hit the scene. Of course, since mobile phones initially were exactly that – telephones you could bring with you on the move – it made sense to not have anything beyond the ability to make calls from wherever you found yourself. These days, of course, technology has endowed the mobile phone with more functionality than it has ever had before.

Today’s “smart” phones are the seeming pinnacle – at least, about as permanent as a peak can get in today’s fast-moving technology age – of everything that mobile phones have been in the past decade or so. Moving swiftly from receivers and makers of phone calls anywhere to receivers and makers of text messages and even image/multimedia messages, mobile phones quickly spiked their popularity when they became capable of using, storing, creating, and eventually downloading mobile music such as ringtones and full music tracks. Taking it to a whole new level, mobile phones soon gained the ability to run software applications such as planners, music libraries and even ported-over console video games.

These video game apps have been fast sellers on the iPhone app store, as they pack a lot of entertainment into a roughly $7 price tag. Some have been truly worth the cash, while some have been fairly lackluster releases or conversions. Among the genres most difficult to satisfactorily convert, though, are first-person shooters – although Gameloft appears to have cracked that particular code with their hot new sci-fi FPS, NOVA, which has emerged as one of the top apps of 2009 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. NOVA, which stands for Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, plunges a player into the role of Kal Wardin, in a tense battle to defend the artificial “near-orbital” satellite range from a mysterious threat approaching on a stolen Marine ship.

The HALO-esque game features 13 levels, already a good sign for those seeking solid replay value. The levels are split into five unique environments, from alien urban, snowy mountain levels, bunkers and spaceships, to expansive jungle milieus. Players race to outwit alien invaders, carving them up with a variety of weapons including grenades, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, handguns, plasma guns and rocket launchers, upping the dramatic ante with cinematics and character voices.

Various multiplayer modes take advantage of the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch, with local or online play including a 1-4 player Deathmatch mode over 5 different maps, or even through Gameloft LIVE. As always, worldwide leaderboards within the game or on the official website provide winners with bragging rights across the globe. The game’s intense battles take place in full 3D rendered environments with a customizable interface and three available control schemes, ensuring that players have a unique interpersonal and visual gaming experience as they fight for humanity.
