Find your way to Nokia’s 6710 Navigator

clip_image0022009 has been a banner year for smartphones and mobile phones in general. As the latest year in a long run that has seen mobile phone manufacturers crank out mobile model after mobile model using developments in technology to integrate new and exciting features that push the functions and limits of both hardware and software, 2009 has seen new players jump into the mobile fray to try and cater to the mobile consumer base’s busy and hectic lifestyles. Turning from business and emergency necessity to personal item and accessory, the mobile phone has undergone quite the transformation over the last few years.

While various new players have come and gone, longtime mobile trend- and direction-setter Nokia has managed to stay in the game by innovating on some levels and maximizing the tried and tested on others. The Finnish communications giant has been at the forefront of change and expansion in the mobile industry, and keeps putting out solid and user-friendly units as time moves on. One such unit is the Nokia 6710, third and best in the Navigator lineup of Nokia phones. Its main limitation is its smaller screen – typical of most Nokia models, even in the age of the widescreen mobile – but it overcomes this seeming handicap with ease thanks to its reliability and functionality.

With a 2.6-inch screen that is reasonable for a standard mobile but a tad small for navigation purposes, the Navigator seems somewhat limited at first due to the difficulty in easily following maps across a tiny viewing area. This is a shame because the GPS reception is excellent, indicated in various other reviews to be “up to par with portable nav devices” and “much better than the iPhone’s.” Nokia Maps is a good way to get around, with a clear display that is easy to read and recognize. Continued updating of regional maps in places such as Australia’s cities may be a necessary task for Nokia, however, as some omissions made for less than convenient driving for some reviewers. That said, for everyday mobile phone use the screen more than does its job with good, bright and vivid colors and an easy-to-read interface.

The 6710 is a typical slider with a full-screen nav panel on the top half, along with a dedicated Maps button, and a standard keypad on the bottom half. A touch panel makes navigation of Nokia Maps much easier than before, with left-right dragging zooming the image in and out [holding the finger down in one direction zooms out big, say from street to global level]. This zoom function also works on the images in the media gallery and web browser as well as in pictures taken with the integrated 5-megapixel camera, which outperforms most other models [even Nokia ones]. The camera function boasts such options as panoramic image stitching and a macro focus mode, enabling users to maximize its sharp images and color reproduction.

While the 6710 falters in its appointed task as a Navigator due largely to its… non-large display, it is a more than solid mobile phone. Taken from that perspective – a good, solid mobile phone with a great camera and reasonably effective navigation feature – it may be seen as a good buy for tourists, who can proceed to new destinations on foot or as vehicular passengers and take great pictures while they’re there.
