Mobile content has branched out considerably in style and variety since the original waves of mobile media hit as ringtones and wallpapers. Evolving continuously alongside its main house the mobile phone, mobile content in the form of ringtones and wallpapers provided users with an opportunity to spice up their high-tech personal unit and extend their personal style through what was once a business executive’s main necessity. Over time, however, users have sought more and more specialized types of mobile content and companies have scrambled to provide this for their hungry market base. The changing landscape of mobile phone technology has given them more room to play in as well, what with the units getting more and more capacity and functionality.
Electronic Arts is one such company that has jumped at the chance to provide plenty of interesting mobile content for its market base. One of the most successful developers of home and console computer games, Electronic Arts or EA emerged as one of the world’s largest game publishers on the third-party level, with successes in movie-license games such as the Harry Potter series, and long strings of franchise-based games such as Need for Speed, The Sims, Battlefield, Burnout, and Command and Conquer. EA has stepped into the mobile content fray with the mission to go beyond mere ringtones and wallpapers, and provide mobile gaming content as only they can. EA recently announced give such new titles to be made available via the App Store: Command and Conquer Red Alert, NBA Live, EA Sports FIFA 10, Mystery Mania and Hasbro’s Boggle. These iPod touch and iPhone game apps are certain to be solid-selling once they hit, given the variety of action and quality in translation from their console and computer brethren.
NBA Live offers now-familiar 5-on-5 basketball action in the familiar manner of the long-running console basketball game series. Giving players a lineup of 30 authentic teams with up-to-date rosters featuring the biggest NBA stars and legends, NBA Live brings multiple modes of basketball action – including Season Mode, where players can pit teams against each other in 82 games, Exhibition Mode where players can pass the time with casual one-off play, or Playoff Mode, where players can power through the intense battle to win the Finals. The NBA Live app is set to have virtual analog stick controls, as well as a touch feature and an “accelerometer” that allows accurate shooting.
In true EA style, the game will come backed up with top-of-the-line music. Previous games offered strong lineups of music forming a soundtrack to play in the background – selections from NERD, Teddybears, Busta Rhymes and Beck being part of the most recent console versions – and the App version of NBA Live 2010 looks to be of the same caliber. EA projects to have it fully stocked with solid tracks from artists on the order of Matt and Kim, Xzibit, and Snoop Dogg, and will also feature commentary from legendary voice of basketball Marv Albert.
