Disney Taps into Tapulous

The fast pace of the modern world keeps us all on our toes constantly, although sometimes it may be difficult for us to keep up. Adaptation has been as constant as change, as we react to the brisk pace of the world we’re part of and try to make some headway in managing it. To that end, we’ve developed mobile phones that serve as our spare brains, with increasingly sophisticated and flexible mobile capabilities that allow us to take more and more things on the road with us. Along with all the serious and focused material and tasks that we take along with us via mobile, entertainment has found its niche as a strong type of mobile content.

One popular type of content is the mobile app, which has brought various functions and tasks on the road with us beyond just making and taking calls and messages. There have been many of these mini-programs developed to maximize the capabilities of the currently-popular hardware platforms built into the modern smartphone, and users have embraced the widely-available apps by purchasing and downloading them to install in their mobile handsets. Apps can serve a variety of purposes, from the serious work- and organization-related tasks to the more enjoyable activities usually involving playing games and creating ringtones. These have emerged as good profit-raisers for various companies, both established and new.

One company that has made a name for itself in the app-production game is Tapulous, who have established themselves as a leading mobile gaming app developer. This company was responsible for the wildly successful Tap Tap Revenge, a gaming app that is available to iPhone and iPod Touch users. Along with Tap Tap Revenge, Tapulous has put out Tap Tap Radiation — #1 gaming app on the iPad upon launch – and Riddim Ribbon, an innovative game that has been similarly successful for the Palo Alto, CA-based developer. Tapulous has gotten so effective at putting out innovative games, in fact, that it has caught the eye of one of the biggest corporations out there looking for a greater mobile content footprint: Disney.

The Walt Disney Company recently acquired Tapulous through undisclosed financial terms. What is known, however, is that Tapulous will be part of the Disnety Interactive Media Group, specifically the DIMG mobile content group. Tapulous founders –CEO and COO –Bart Decrem and Andrew Lacy will be assuming leadership roles as the Tapulous team makes the move. Decrem, who will be reporting to DIMG President Steve Wadsworth, remarked that Tapulous would be “at the center of Disney’s mobile strategy” and that they’re looking forward to working with “Disney’s powerful breadth of content and heritage in technological innovation.”

Tapulous brings considerable reinforcement to DIMG’s mobile games group with a strong portfolio of games and entertainment items. Wadsworth recognized Tapulous’ immense value and contribution by describing the context the move takes place in – first by saying that “Mobile gaming is seeing unprecedented growth and this is the right time to invest to strengthen our position in the mobile business” and secondly by acknowledging that Decrem and Lacy have established the company as an “accomplished mobile games developer” that is truly welcome at Disney.
