Apple announced last Friday that the formula the signal strength in the iPhone is totally wrong. Apple was shocked to discover that they have been using the wrong formula to inform their users how much signal their units are getting.
Upon the release of the latest iPhone last June 24, there have been complaints of the signal strength dropping from 4 bars to 1 bar. Customers say that if they hold the phone in a certain way, the signal strength plunges to 1. They were even able to make a name for this hold: death grip. Holding the phone where the small black strip of the edge of the phone causes the bar strength to drop.
The response of Apple was surprising. They said the strength of the signal should not even be as high as four or five bars. Apple said that the big drop was because the high signal strength was never real in the first place. They said that they will fix this as soon as possible. With the recommendations from AT&T for a software upgrade, the iPhone misinformation will be fixed within a few weeks. This formula was the very first formula Apple used when they launched the iPhone back in 2007.
Apple admitted their mistake and apologizes for the anxiety they have caused their customers. They plan to make some upgrades to make the bars look taller and easier for users to see.
Unbiased comments from engineers not working for Apple commented that the fault in the design is in the antenna location in the case of the phone. Apple maintains that their design maintains a good wireless performance especially the iPhone 4 as compared to earlier models. Spencer Webb, the president for antenna design for Apple, commented that although the so called death grip is causing a huge drop in the signal bars, calls are never interrupted. It is not really the 1 bar signal that bothers a user but a dropped call.
AT &T has embarked themselves to better serve their subscribers by investing in multibillion dollar projects upgrading network signal specially in New York, San Francisco and other areas where the iPhone is popular. Webb said that although there is a drop in the signal, it is still too early to tell if there is a real problem in the reception. It is too early to conclude that there is a problem in the antenna.
Although there are still complaints about calls being dropped and slow data service, the iPhone is still a huge success especially in the United States. Even outside the US, countries in Europe and Asia highly regard the iPhone as the best phone ever to have been created for our century. The success of Apple extends to Japan where technology has always been a major trend for the culture. The 1.7 million units sold only after 3 days of release says it all.
