Mobile content has grown considerably in both scope and diversity. Ever since mobile phones exhibited the capability to run applications – essentially small but powerful software programs of various sorts and types, all maximizing the functionality of today’s “smart” phones – the numbers of these little programs have ballooned, and now apps exist to help us run almost every task under the sun. Mobile phones have thus added another checked box to their list of accomplishments in technological evolution: they have gone from single-purpose mobile calling devices to versatile personal items to powerful pocket machines capable of nearly anything a mobile user would need on the go.
One popular application making the rounds and turning heads is Slacker Radio, a relatively new app which has recently been made available for Android phones. Allowing users to take part in enjoying the music discovery experience afforded by Slacker Radio, the application features over 100 pre-programmed Slacker stations including genre, spotlight and seasonal categories and 10,000 artist-based stations – as well as the ability for users to create their own custom stations. Beyond that, the app offers users a multitude of additional perks, including bios of their favorite artists, reviews of the latest albums, the ability to preview songs, access to song lyrics and the option to fine-tune the station they want to listen to.
Available in the US and Canada, Slacker has performed its services as an interactive online radio service accessible via web browser and through mobile apps – such as the current Slacker Radio – on smartphones, and even through specialized Slacker Personal Radio Players, available since 2008. Users availing of the service can typically use Slacker’s preset music stations or create and share their own. Slacker’s service library has kept growing since its founding in 2004 and launch in 2007 – as of April the previous year they had over 2.4 million songs, which were categorized into over 100 stations and 10,000 artist stations. The 100 pre-programmed stations are preset by professional DJs to ensure a good balance of music, and an be customized further by users who can add or ban artists and songs as they like.
Visiting Slacker.com on an Android smartphone allows users to access the Slacker Radio app for free. To make matters even simpler, Verizon users on the new Motorola Droid can visit the Verizon channel of the Android Market to locate the Slacker Radio app. No matter the handset, the Slacker Radio app works with the Slacker Basic Radio service, as well as the Slacker Radio Plus and Premium Radio subscription formats. The new iteration of the Slacker Radio app, however, has been optimized for use on Android handsets such as HTC’s G1, Mytouch and Droid Eris, as well as the aforementioned Motorola Droid. Part of the features included in the optimization for Android smartphones are support for vertical or horizontal viewing orientation, an easy-to-follow interface, and background operation [perfect for unobtrusive use, as the user can control the app from a desktop widget]. With all these versatile features and functions for Slacker’s latest offering, it’s no wonder that Slacker marketing Senior VP Jonathan Sasse can confidently say that “Slacker continues to eliminate the obstacles between listeners and their favorite music.”
