A Remarq-able LG Release

Mobile phones have all but integrated themselves into our increasingly-busy lives as seamlessly as their bright touch screens flow into their sleek black or silver frames. With their myriad features that entertain and streamline, increasingly smart capabilities that fit well into virtually any context that cones up, and compact size and high portability, the mobile models of today are a far cry from the landline phones we’ve grown up with. They’re even a far cry from the mobile models of old, which typically boasted an almost single-minded focus on calls and a much larger body frame that made them more cumbersome than convenient.

One thing that has been influencing many mobile phone manufacturers of late is the eco-friendly aspect of creating mobile phones. Indeed, as multifunctional as these gadgets are, they’re ultimately still chunks of plastic that get churned out on a regular basis, and manufacturers have started to take notice of things they could do to lessen the environmental impact of this. To that end, LG have released the Remarq, an environmentally friendly mobile phone that even has a carbon footprint calculator in addition to its great QWERTY keyboard, 1.3-megapixel camera and convenient ergonomical design. This slider messenger has 19% recycled plastic construction, and 87% of its parts can in turn be recycled after you’re done with it.

The Remarq has a rounded, squat design reminiscent of other square sliders like the Verizon Wireless Blitz and Samsung’s Reclaim. Recycled ingredients and all, it feels very sturdy and solid in hand, and its 3.5” by 2.5” by 0.6” frame is surrounded by rounded curves that give it a chubby but sleek feel. The front boasts the very sharp 2.2” display, which supports 262,000 colors and has a 220×176 pixel resolution, all  the better for your colorful images, crisp text and even animated wallpaper. The backlit, slide-out four-row QWERTY is fairly roomy for such a small phone, with well-spaced keys that are raised for easy typing.

The Remarq’s many features include a 600-entry phone book, GPS with Sprint Navigation and Family Locator, voice command support, a mobile Web browser, and stereo Bluetooth. Text and multimedia messaging have a helpful threaded view that displays messages and replies like a chat session. Email is also supported, with Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and other POP or IMAP servers catered to. Microsoft Exchange and OWA will also work, along with instant messaging. The Web browser is joined by a variety of social networking applications including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Sprint’s Social Zone. These Java apps look great and work fine, although they load somewhat slowly.

The many features are rounded out by a music player that lets you organize songs by album, genre, and artist, as well as create and edit playlists. Up to 16GB worth of microSD card memory can beef up your multimedia storage needs. The Remarq also has a 1.3-megapixel camera with three resolutions and three quality settings, but it only takes still pictures, and not especially remarkable ones at that. The Remarq also comes with its most unique feature, the Eco Calculator, which helps you measure your carbon footprint and how much of it you’d be decreasing by walking or cycling a certain range of hours or miles instead of driving.
