Here is a vendor analysis of the leading cell phone manufacturers:
1. Nokia
–IDC said that Nokia grew which showed an increase in device shipments by upto 61% in the third quarter of this year but at the same time the average selling prices dropped as compared to last year’s average.
–Strategy Analytics said that Nokia’s growth this fourth quarter will have to depend on the success the new high-profile phone models (the N8, C7, C6-01 and E7). They are to compete with Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung, RIM, HTC and others.
2. Samsung
–IDC said that Samsung has made a mark in their history. They were able to push the sales making 70 million units in sales. Projecting things for the 4th quarter, Samsung seems to be ready to face its competitors with the second wave of its sales arm.
–Strategy Analytics believes that Samsung was able to continue to grow slightly above-average because of the healthy demand for the Android smartphones such as the Galaxy S.
3. LG
–IDC said that unlike its competitors LG has not yet made an impact in the smartphone category unlike. Sales fell and the operating margin is the same of last years. LG has yet to prove themselves in the smartphone department.
–Strategy Analytics said LG should be careful as not to repeat the error made by Motorola and Ericsson which were not felt during the boom of 3G. They must be aware of the trend and grab hold of it.
4. Apple
–IDC said that the iPhone 4 had a good record which made Apple’s record shipment performance up and recognized and patronized in 17 new countries last quarter. Even if they had the controversial “Antennagate” problem they were still able to pull off the rabbit on the hat trick.
–Strategy Analytics championed Apple and said they were star performers because they overtook RIM and Sony Ericsson. Apple is consistent and continues to grow and expand its retail presence across the globe and operators worldwide. The next big step for Apple is in the CDMA version which could put a competitive pressure on Samsung, LG and Motorola next year.
5. Research In Motion
–IDC said that the Torch boosted RIM’s results in the United States. This has been their key market because of the intensity of the competition.
–Strategy Analytics said that RIM has to improve its touchphone features. They are still weak in this department and have to appeal more to smartphone users. So far, this has not yet been addressed by the manufacturer.
