DadaMobile and the Ringtone Revolution

The provision of mobile content has long been proven to be a viable business, ever since the former absolute-necessity-only cell phone metamorphosed into a popular, good-for-everyone personal item that served as much for self-expression and individuality as for practicality and sensible use. Customizable wallpaper, applications, widgets, and ringtones top the lists of content that provide cell phone users with various means to tweak and personalize their ever-evolving mobile phone units, and the options increase almost by the day, with each new iteration of the mobile phone expanding and improving its features and allowing for more and more unique touches to be installed.

The aforementioned mobile content has been provided in various formats, one of the most popular of which is the website download. Mobile service providers essentially set up a separate multimedia service under their overall umbrella, with a website as the main interface accessible to interested users. Would-be users can then either place their orders for the music they want to download, which will then be sent to their mobile phones, or they can download the music from the site and copy or install them to the phones themselves. Various payment methods are typically allowed for this method, with the most popular being either Paypal or secure credit card billing.

One popular website-based downloading service comes to consumers courtesy of Dada Enterprises, a direct-to-consumer mobile entertainment company that has come to be associated with Sony Music. Already one of the top 40 music storefronts just months after its launch, Dada Enterprises’ mobile club on dada.net provides various audio and video clips, ringtones and other downloadable content with a monthly rate of $9.99 for 15 monthly downloads. Alternatively, various rate structures are available for Boost, Sprint and Virgin Mobile users, granting them additional flexibility in paying for a set number of tones. The MP3s provided are encoded in a high bitrate of around 256 kbps on average – and they’re DRM-free, meaning no extra encryption keeps users from using their downloaded content as they see fit with unlimited playback, which already sets DadaMobile apart from various other services. The service is compatible with At&T, Sprint, Nextel, Alltel, CellularOne and T-Mobile. Dada also provides a similar mobile content service via Sony Music Box, a BREW application on US Cellular, Alltel and Verizon Wireless.

The WQeb 2.0 and WAP-award-winning website is easy to navigate and sign up for. Potential members just sign up with their mobile number, wait for a confirmation code to be sent to their phone, and key the code in on the website. The registration form is intuitive and simple, and will have you downloading quickly. While this is certainly a convenient setup, however, this exposes your mobile phone to spam – and Dada will send you quite a bit – although ultimately one has to recognize that such a thing is part and parcel of the mobile content give-and-take, especially when one considers the large library of exclusive Sony Music content available only on Dada – realtones, voice tones and even videotones from Sony label artists not available anywhere else.
